Members of the A’van Club of Australia Inc. will be
attending the Club’s 13th AGM Australian Gathering
from 23 to 30 April 2012.
This week-long AGM Gathering also gives the Committee
and members the opportunity for quite a different approach to
the format of previous AGMs.
Alice Springs is to be the location for the 2012 national
gathering. The Committee has been working on locations for
the 2012 and 2013 national gatherings for some time now, and
initially it was working on the idea of the Alice in 2013; however,
following a straw vote at the end of the AGM in Maroochydore
in 2011, the Committee decided to go with the Alice in 2012
when over two-thirds of those at the meeting indicated that
they would be keen to go now rather than waiting until 2013.
And, in a departure from tradition, and again following
a straw vote at the AGM as to whether members would be
comfortable with midweek gatherings, the gathering in the Alice
will be held from Monday to Sunday. If this format is successful
in 2013, during-the-week Gatherings could become more
common for the Club.
Two hundred and fifty-one A’vans were registered for the
recent gathering in Maroochydore. The new activities tried
(fishing competition, canoeing, night bowls, the shed and
travellers’ first aid sessions) were all well attended and, from
reports, quite successful.
One of the many highlights of this gathering was the dinner
on the Saturday night at the Maroochydore RSL. Comments
from members at a number of the street breakfasts on the

Because of the uniqueness of Alice Springs and
surrounding areas it is envisaged that most members will be
keen to ‘do their own thing’ for much of the week – either by
themselves or in small groups; however, the Club’s AGM and
annual dinner will remain as two major events.
Over 200 A’vans have booked at the park and more than
400 people from all states will attend.
Most members will stay approximately 10 days, while others
will stay for over two weeks. Many will make Alice the jumping-
off point for extended trips to the north (Darwin et cetera), while
others will head into the Kimberley and Western Australia.
