production of lamb, beef and pork ensure no one goes hungry
here. One of the largest towns on the Darling Downs, with a
population of around 12,500 in town and 5500 throughout the
rural district, it is home to historic Jimbour House, a majestic
sandstone homestead built in the late 1800s. The open gardens
are delightful, and the award-winning wines at Rangemore Estate
are well-known locally.
For camping, try Lake Broadwater Conservation Park,
approximately 20 kilometres from town. Wilga Bush Camping
Ground is two kilometres north of the lake, with fireplaces, tank
water, shelter shed and amenities. If you're a birdwatcher, you'll
be in your element here -- ducks, moorhens, grebes, cormorants,
darters, herons, swans, stilts, jabirus and brolgas are all regularly
sighted, along with eastern grey kangaroos, red necked
wallabies, koalas, brush-tailed possums and even echidnas.
Forty kilometres out of Dalby, we reached Jondaryan
Woolshed, Queensland's oldest woolshed and an impressive
open-air working museum. It was almost like herding our very
own flock of two as we guided the girls through the old school
house, replete with a huge poster of the 'rules' of the former
Children's National Guild of Courtesy.
Largely run by enthusiastic volunteers, Jondaryan Woolshed
was established in 1858 and the site is spread over 12 acres
containing shearers' quarters, huts, blacksmithing areas, a
schoolmaster's residence, sawmill, and even the old Woodleigh
Cheese factory. We missed out on the tea and damper, which
has gained a loyal following, but met some friendly geese and
calves at the growing animal nursery, said 'hi' to a few sheep,
and took a peek at the onsite beehive.
An almost full day of driving took us partly through the Bunya
Mountains. The cone-shaped trees look so unique, Miss Four
and Miss Six shouted out 'Bunya!' each time they spotted one.
This spectacular wilderness range, located between Kingaroy
and Dalby, forms part of the Great Dividing Range, and offers
a subtropical environment of cool, green rainforest, eucalypt
forests and woodlands, and the world's largest bunya pine forest.
This is a part of Queensland that you don't often encounter on
the tourist brochures -- it's rich and dense, and the bunya pines
are majestic, especially during October when King Orchids flash
brilliant yellow at the top of the canopies.
Stopping off at Bunya Forest Gallery and Tearoom, we
enjoyed a light lunch with some genuine Australian bush
seasonings, and purchased some serves of bunya nuts to enjoy
as we continued our journey towards Kingaroy.
My main enthusiasm for Kingaroy can be summed up in
one word: cheese. This cosmopolitan town is surrounded by
extensive and picturesque rolling hills of that rich red hue you just
know grows rich grass to produce wholesome milk, resulting in
amazing cheese. Kingaroy Cheese is an award-winning label,
and a trip to the town is not complete without a visit to Taste
South Burnett, located at the old butter factory. Here, you can
sample wines from nearby wineries including Barambah, Bellbird,
Bridgeman Downs, Captain's Paddock and Clovely Estate,
purchase locally produced olives, and get your fill of Kingaroy
ash-rolled brie, fetta and cheddar.
While this is the perfect place to stock up for your next
cheese and wine party, Kingaroy's original claim to fame is as the
'Peanut Capital of Australia'. The Kingaroy Peanut Van, boasting
the 'world's best peanuts', has been onsite at 14 Kingaroy Street
since 1969, and its vintage signage makes for a great photo
opportunity. There are peanuts of all flavours, guaranteed to be
the freshest you've tasted. With full bellies, we pulled into BIG4
Kingaroy, which had spacious sites and a lovely clean pool, ideal
to freshen up after a day of driving and tasting.
